2017: A Time to Strengthen Your Authority
By Minister Michele L. Scott
I recently heard someone say that if you have a persistent problem, you are not making its solution a priority. The statement struck me as odd, yet the speaker was spot on. By focusing so much on the problem, it becomes the priority. The world we live in is and always will be plagued with so many problems. There are far more than there is time for us to solve, so what can we really do? Matthew 6:34 declares: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (NIV) God’s Word tells us that the things we encounter today should be addressed today. Knowing that tomorrow is not promised, let’s stop giving power to problems instead of finding strength in solutions.
The challenges that we face are just that, ours to face. Each requires a response and the result can have long-term implications. I am reminded of bullies and math. Everyone remembers David’s win over Goliath but what about the tens thousand other soldiers standing by? And, we really did end up using the math we learned in school. Without it we couldn’t balance our checkbooks! Some solutions to problems occur when someone steps up and does something; while others evolve over time as we build on foundations previously laid. The trials of this year will continue to follow us into the next until we consciously make solutions our priority. Just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, solutions to our problems may take time, critical assessment, discipline and accountability. Deliberate prayer and Spirit-filled direction will ensure our success.
Before setting out to climb the mountain, consider this: some of our problems are self imposed and a mere turning away or pushing back will bring them to an end. Other problems will require much more than self-will and this is where God’s solution must become our priority: Matt 6:33: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” When we seek after the things that God desires for our lives (hint: Jeremiah 29:11) we will experience the shift. A change in your priority will strengthen your authority!
2017 is just around the corner with 2016 still lingering in our rearview mirror. The most important thing to remember for a new year is that God has afforded us another opportunity to do better and be better. What will you do with 2017? As for me, in my daily walk, my marriage and in ministry, I have adopted 3 P’s: Pray~Prioritize~Press!
Philippian 3:12-16: “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus”.
May God continue to bless you and yours in the New Year!
Love you, TRIM MEM
